Painful Breastfeeding

Sore nipples and breasts whilst breastfeeding can occur for many reasons, such as nipple damage or trauma, nipple and breast thrush, mastitis, blocked ducts, white spot and vasospasm. These can make breastfeeding painful and challenging, and many mums may dread feeding time.

With the proper support, these challenges may be overcome, as breastfeeding is not meant to be painful and can even be enjoyable. (continues below)
Should breastfeeding be painful
Our initial 90-minute consultation will focus first on understanding you and your baby’s medical history, feeding patterns, growth, output (wet/dirty nappies) and behaviour, as well as your breast health (including examination) and history. I will observe you breastfeeding your baby and provide guidance to optimise position and attachment, for comfort and to help your baby remove milk most efficiently, without pain. I will provide recommendations based on my assessment and explain the best breastfeeding management for your unique situation. This will address strategies to promote healing of sore and tender nipples or investigation of underlying infection, which may require medical follow-up. Together we will arrive at a management plan that meets your unique feeding needs. I provide a brief follow-up phone call within days of the assessment to check on you and your little one. Additional 30-60 minute appointments will be arranged depending on your needs.
With support, you will have the confidence to feed your little one. Small problems dealt with quickly can be resolved with the right care. To make a booking, please click the button below.
